The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) is a federation of national associations of certified radio amateurs, representing over 150 countries and separate territories around the world.

The three IARU Regions are organised to broadly mirror the structure of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and its related regional telecommunications organisations. The Regions comprise:
- IARU Region 1: Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Northern Asia
- IARU Region 2: The Americas
- IARU Region 3: Asia-Pacific

The IARU represents the interests of the Amateur Radio Service worldwide to relevant international organisations, promoting the interests of amateur radio and seeking to protect and enhance its spectrum privileges.

The 14th IARU Region 3 Conference, Christchurch, New Zealand

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 3, 14th Triennial Conference was held on 12-16 October, hosted by the NZART in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Delegates from 10 member societies (ARRL, ARSI, CRSA, HARTS, JARL, KARL, NZART, ORARI, SARTS and WIA), with RAST, RSGB and VARC being represented by proxy. Also attending was the IARU President Tim Ellam VE6SH and Vice President Ole Garpestad LA2RR, from Region 1 President Hans Timmerman PB2T and Secretary Dennis Green ZS4BS and Region 2 Secretary Ramon Santoyo XE1KK.

ITU Secretray General at IARU Stand

The ITU Telecom World 2009 was concluded today with a visit by the ITU Secretray General, Dr. Hamadoun Toure (HB9EHT). Throughout the last the last 5 days VIPs, regulators, delegates, youth and hams have visited the IARU stand. 

The IARU stand was supported by Brennan - N4QX, Hani - OD5TE/HB9ERL, Hans - DF5UG, Hans - F5VKP/HB9AQS, Gerald - HB9AJU, and Betty - F6IOC, Andy - HB9JOE, Yvonne - HB9ELF and Peter - HB9CET besides visits from many other local hams.  

4U1ITU was activated during the event with the exceptional support of the International Amateur Radio Club (IARC) President Attila - OM1AM/HB9IAJ.

IARU at the ITU Telecom World 2009

As of Sunday Afternoon October 4, 2009 The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) stand was completed and ready for the ITU Telecom World 2009 opening on October 5 and will last till October 9, 2009. Delegates and guest are invited to Stand 2652 in Hall 2, close to the entrances to Halls 4 and 5.

4U1ITU will be activated during the ITU Telecom 2009.

IARU R2 EC meeting

The IARU Region 2 EC met for its annual meeting in Lima Peru 19-20 September 2009. On behalf of Region 1 IARU Hans PB2T attended this meeting as observer. It was interesting to see how the Region 2 EC meetings are conducted in both English and Spanish language. Emergency communications formed an important part of the discussions. IARU Region 1 expressed its concerns that apparently no progress was made on mutual recognition of IARP and CEPT licenses. It was good to hear that still results can be expected. CEPT PT-C Meeting

As part of the CEPT preparation programme for WRC-12 a meeting of Project Team C will take place in Geneva during the 16th-18th September.   This team deals with, amongst other agenda items, A.I. 1.23 which is the amateur service proposal for a frequency segment around 500 kHz.

RSGB HF Manager and Region 1 LF Coordinator John Gould G3WKL will attend as part of the UK delegation and Region 1 HF Chairman Ulrich Mueller DK4VW will be in the German delegation.   The CEPT coordinator for this agenda item is EC member Colin Thomas, G3PSM.

During this meeting it is hoped to identify a specific frequency segment that can be presented to the WRC.

ATU preparation for WRC-12

The ITU Radiocommunication Bureau, in collaboration with Africa Telecommunication Union (ATU), is organizing an ITU Meeting on WRC‑12 preparations. In addition to the information relating to the Bureau's and regional preparations for WRC-12, this meeting will allow regional groups to present any of their preliminary views with respect to WRC‑12 Agenda items. It will also provide participants the opportunity to exchange information and views on the preliminary draft common proposals and positions of other regional groups and those of some organizations.

Tafa DIOP, 6W1KI -IARU Region 1 Vice president registered under  ATU, will  represent  IARU at  that important meeting.

IARU at the ITU Telecom World 2009

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) will be exhibiting and participating at the upcoming ITU Telecom World 2009 October 5 to October 9, 2009. Stand 2652 in Hall 2, close to the entrances to Halls 4 and 5. Click here to see the floor plan.  

ITU Telecom 2009 will be used to roll out the new IARU Emergency Communications Brochure, as well as to showcase some publications of IARU member societies (IARU R1 member societies are invited to send their publications for inclusion).

IARU delegates include: IARU president VE6SH - Tim Ellam, N4QX - Brennan Price, IARU R1 Executive Committee member  F6IOC - Betty Magnin, DF5UG - Hans Ehlers and IARU R1 Executive Committee member  OD5TE - Hani Raad.

SSB Field Day logs welcome

Field day groups in countries with low Field Day contest activity and therefore without adjudicator may send the log to fdssb at dxhf.darc.de  (this is a robot) | Subject: callsign  - Format: STF or Cabrillo to get their result included into the international list. (In case of problems send to:  DK2OY at gmx.de).

Some societies are already exchanging Field Day logs to get an overview and an international ranking list. HB9CZF and DK2OY are combining the national logs.
