The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) is a federation of national associations of certified radio amateurs, representing over 150 countries and separate territories around the world.

The three IARU Regions are organised to broadly mirror the structure of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and its related regional telecommunications organisations. The Regions comprise:
- IARU Region 1: Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Northern Asia
- IARU Region 2: The Americas
- IARU Region 3: Asia-Pacific

The IARU represents the interests of the Amateur Radio Service worldwide to relevant international organisations, promoting the interests of amateur radio and seeking to protect and enhance its spectrum privileges.

EA8AK retires as MEP

EA8AKIn May 2009 Member of European Parliament Fernando Fernández Martín will retire. Fernando holds an amateur licence EA8AK and during his term as MEP he has supported the case of amateur radio whenever possible. In this respect we especially remember his proposals and amendments for the text of the R&TTE and EMC directives.

Besides these activities Fernando made it possible that the IARU Region 1 EUROCOM Working Group could have a one week exhibition in the  European Parliament in order to promote our case.

IARU Region 1 President PB2T took the opportunity to visit Fernado during his last week in Brussels and thanked him for his efforts. It was agreed that Region 1 will express its gratitude to EA8AK on a future occasion with more amateur radio friends being present.
