Second vote on PLT standard prEN50561-1

During the IARU R1 EMC WG in Friedrichshafen 2012 the issues about the European PLT standard were discussed in detail and with many pro and cons. After all of the discussion had taken place a final vote was taken. With great majority, the decision of the WG was to encourage members societies to form a positive opinion on the draft standard prEN50561-1 among national standardization bodies.

Video on LED disturbances

We have recently produced a small video showing how to assess the disturbance potential of LED lighting equipment. You can watch the video on youtube by clicking here.

Please make your own observations as well and forward you findings here, to your local and national radio club, and possible inform market surveillance, if you think it is necessary.

New Version of ICNIRPcalc V1.01 available for download

altA new Version V1.01 of the software ICNIRPcalc was uploaded to the IARU R1 Server. For download please click here. With ICNIRPcalc everbody can calculate safety distances for many know amateur radio antennas with respect to ICNIRP limits. A similar programm is in use in Germany for station assesment for many years.

The Version 1.0 contained a major bug, because it ran only with German keyboard settings. This bug should be gone now. Furthermore the Program can now be used in German, English and French, and it is prepared to carry other languages, if provided to the author.

LED lighting equipment may cause severe electromagnetic disturbances

More an more LED lights are entering the market and are being used by radio amateur and their neighbors. There is a limit to maximum disturbance voltage on the mains port defined in EN55015, which is equivalent to the protection of EN55022, however it is not fully implemented within the EU due to a transition period of the standard.

As consequence, we can observe some LED lights causing only little trouble, others however cause a great amount of harmful interference due to mains line radiation. As worst case, we identified some LED lights which could be as far as 40 - 60 dB over the limit on some frequencies. In the following paper you can monitor some measurements [1] we have done ourselves under non emc lab conditions, however there is also an ETSI paper available [2], which addresses the problem.

We suggest to monitor the development in you country closely and make own measurements, if feasible.
